The site is located near Pia\u021ba Roman\u0103, on Dacia Boulevard, and initially hosted the slum of Popa Cosma (also known as Dima Tabacu).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 19th century, the neighborhood was predominantly composed of boyar\u2019s and other notable figures of the time\u2019s houses. Alexandru Villara, one of the wealthiest boyars in the country, undertook the construction of a building even more imposing than the royal palace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the works were completed, Alexandru Villara gifted the house to his daughter <strong>Elena<\/strong> as a wedding present to the politician <strong>Scarlat Kretzulescu<\/strong>. He undertook a series of renovations aimed at significantly beautifying the residence. An admirer of the wonders of Paris, Scarlat Kretzulescu developed a keen taste for beauty, which led him to add wrought iron railings to the balcony and along the main staircases, and to partially replace the flooring with beautifully decorated rosewood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silverware, furniture, porcelain, French and Italian paintings: under Scarlat Kretzulescu\u2019s influence, the building became more elegant. The richly carved libraries are filled with a variety of books. The exteriors also transformed. A greenhouse was set up, and exotic flora flourished in the garden. In this oasis of beauty, Scarlat Kretzulescu even introduced an ibis from Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For his notable contribution to the beautification of the place, the man gave his name to the building, now called the \u00ab\u00a0<strong>Scarlat Kretzulescu House<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00bb He passed away in 1874, and his brother Constantin inherited it before selling to Baron Frank, the director of the Central Bank of Romania.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"bloc_2_9\" class=\"blocmedia blocmedia--textright blocmedia--nocolor\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-6\">\n<div class=\"slider\">\n<div id=\"slider-bloc_2_9\" class=\"flexslider flexslider--blocmedia loading\">\n<ul class=\"slides list-unstyled\">\n<li class=\"slider-li\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.efibucarest.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_4585-722x564.jpg\" data-fancybox=\"rel-slider-bloc_2_9\" data-caption=\"\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.efibucarest.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_4585-722x564.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-5 d-flex flex-column justify-content-center align-items-start mb-2 mb-md-0\">\n<div class=\"text\">\n<h2>Transformation into a State House<\/h2>\n<p>In 1902, the building changed function, transitioning from a private residence to a state property. Its last owner, Baron Frank, sold the house to the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Instruction. The building underwent many changes between 1902 and 1963. It was first designated for the University of Bucharest, where it became the electrical laboratory led by the scientist Dragomir Hurmuzescu. The museum held over 300,000 items, organized into 250 collections (manuscripts, documents, photographs). Some displayed items were over 500 years old. The total value of the collection reached one billion euros.
